Why We Offer 8 am to 4 pm Sessions

At Planet Ability, we know that for many of our families, the day doesn't start with a gentle alarm and a slow cup of coffee. It often starts with a high-stakes negotiation over socks or a desperate search for a school form.
We’ve also lived through the other end of the day: the 3:30 pm meltdown, the executive function "cliff," and the sheer exhaustion of masking through a six-hour school day.
When we designed our practice on our beautiful 2.5-acre property in Warrandyte, we didn’t just think about the equipment in our sensory gym or which therapy dog would be the best fit for our team. We thought deeply about *time*.
This is why we’ve intentionally structured our sessions to run between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. It’s a decision rooted in lived experience and a fierce commitment to the well-being of both our clients and our clinicians.

Here is the "why":
There is a biological reason why the morning often feels different for neurodivergent individuals.
For many autistic and ADHD folk, executive functioning (the brain’s "management system") is like a phone battery that drains faster than average. Every sensory input, every social interaction, and every transition throughout the day takes a percentage of that battery. By 4:00 pm, many of our participants are running on 1% or have already hit "low power mode."
1. Harnessing Morning Alertness
Research shows that many people have more cognitive and emotional resources available in the morning. By offering sessions starting at 8:00 am, we can tap into that window of availability. This is the time when practising new skills, like executive functioning strategies or fine motor tasks, feels more doable.
2: Post-School Slump
We’ve all been there. The "3:00 pm slump" is real for everyone, but for neurodivergent children and adults, it can be a full-scale executive dysfunction.
In the therapy world, there is often a push for "after-school" slots. While we understand the logistical convenience for parents, we’ve seen firsthand that these sessions are often the least productive. If a child has spent six hours navigating a classroom, the last thing their nervous system needs is to "work" on therapy goals at 4 pm.
By focusing our energy between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, we ensure that:
* Clients are seen when they have the highest capacity for engagement.
* We aren't adding to the "after-school burnout" cycle.
* Sessions can focus on setting up the day for success rather than trying to fix a day that has already become overwhelming.

🚀 Clinician Care: We Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup
This is the part of the conversation that doesn't get talked about enough in healthcare. Our OT team at Planet Ability are neurodivergent themselves. We navigate the same sensory sensitivities and executive function hurdles that our clients do.
Clinician burnout is a crisis in the NDIS space. When therapists are forced to work late into the evening to accommodate traditional school hours, their own regulation suffers. A dysregulated therapist cannot provide a regulated, safe space for a client. It’s that simple.
By sticking to an 8-4 schedule:
* Our OTs stay "in their window of tolerance."
* We have the mental energy to write those detailed, high-quality NDIS Functional Capacity Assessments
* We maintain a sustainable practice where we can show up 100% for every single person who walks through our doors.
We believe that by protecting our team’s energy, we are providing a better service to you. When we are regulated, we can be the "calm in the storm" for our clients.
🚀 The "Why, Who, and When Not" Framework
We want to be transparent about how we work so you can decide if Planet Ability is the right fit for your family.
Why do we do it:
To maximise neurobiological "readiness," utilise natural light for regulation, and ensure our clinicians remain high-functioning and burnout-free.
Who it is for:
* Early Birds: Kids and adults who are most alert and "themselves" in the morning.
* The Overwhelmed: Those who find that after-school demands lead to meltdowns or shutdowns.
* Systems-Builders: Families looking to build a structured, regulated start to their day.
* Day-Program Participants: Individuals involved in Planet Possible or other community-based daytime activities.
When it might NOT be for you:
* The "Night Owls": If your (or your child's) nervous system truly doesn't "wake up" until 11:00 am, an 8:00 am session will be a struggle.
* High-Stress Mornings: If the rush to get to Warrandyte creates more dysregulation than the therapy provides, a community-based session or a different time might be better.
